I'm Just Running For Office So I Can Meet Eddie Vedder

Memo to the Green Party: stop embarrassing me.

Orange County has elections for the 48th Congressional District tomorrow, and Green Party candidate Béa Tiritilli was interviewed on KPCC this afternoon. She said she would call for the immediate withdrawal of all our troops from Iraq. When asked the logical followup - what would she do to prevent a civil war between the Shi'ites, Sunnis and Kurds? - her response was, "That's a good question." Well played, Madam. She then suggested shuttering all foreign military bases. It's possible she would have gotten better mileage just screaming frantically, "Please don’t elect me! Please don’t elect me! Please don’t elect me!"

Meanwhile, a libertarian candidate on the same show came off strong, articulate and confident. This is a guy proposing to completely eliminate the Department of Energy and the Department of Education. It's frustrating to hear another progressive on the radio sounding like an idealistic dolt, and meanwhile this libertarian guy on the same show dressing up CRAZY so it tastes like a nice turkey dinner with the fam.

Asked about energy, Miss Tiritilli said she would end our dependence on oil as a fuel source. Okay... how? "...Solar power, wind power... solar electric cars…" Solar electric cars? Isn’t that what George Jetson drives? She went on to propose heating homes in the winter by harnessing the enormous power of children’s Christmas wishes.
