It’s so much easier for Oprah Winfrey to make the periodic altruistic attempt at raising social consciousness when she gets to do it nuzzling up to a cute boy-toy celebrity. Fortunately for the earth, its concerns are being championed by cute boy-toy Leonardo DiCaprio. To quote Oprah from the lengthy clip you can view on her website, Oprah After The Show (and as featured under the dubious heading ‘Quote of the Day’):
I read about global warming and I think, “Okay, the temperature's going to go up. Then I'll go to a cooler place.” But now I feel a sense of responsibility.
And thus the supreme power of handsome young celebrity is maintained. Thank God DiCaprio doesn’t work for Exxon. This hugely inspiring Quote of the Day ™ was part of an attempt to prod reflective self-analysis out of an audience strangely preoccupied with the particulars of hybrids. Hm, what would make an audience on the Oprah show fixate on cars? As the questions from the crowd become increasingly more pointed – from “are hybrid cars safe” to “are hybrid cars expensive” to “if you were to, say, get a hybrid car as a free gift from a talk show host, would you still be able to claim the hybrid car tax credit?” the clip fades out before Oprah loses her shit and screams “Enough! You’re not getting any damn cars! Tickets to see that Al Gore movie and a fucking polar bear screen saver and that’s it, you bloodsucking parasites!”
