Just as concerns reached a fever pitch that 2007 could be a year in which U2 makes only profitable public appearances, Al Gore has stepped in with Live Earth, a 24-hour concert on 7/7/07 featuring over 100 musical acts. Gore, along with Kevin Wall, Pharrell Williams, Maná and Cameron Diaz (Bob Geldof was too inebriated to lend his name) conceived of the event to raise awareness for Save Our Selves (SOS) – The Campaign for a Climate in Crisis.
Live Earth will reach an audience of more than 2 billion people, in person and through broadcasts. 25 acts have been announced, including Bon Jovi, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters and Snoop Dogg. (U2 has playfully failed to appear on the initial list, as if there’s a chance in hell Bono will let Snoop Dogg out-righteous his ass.) The Black Eyed Peas are making an appearance as part of their parole requirements from Music Jail (due to their conviction on “My Humps”-writing-related charges.)
