It’s no secret that Spencer Tunick has a thing for naked people. But as it turns out, Tunick has another passion: the need for action against global climate change. The world-renowned installation artist has been photographing large groups of nudes in strange locations for over 20 years. His latest project involved 600 naked participants, the Aletsch Glacier in Switzerland, and presumably some frostbite in some places.
Dramatic action needs to be taken against greenhouse gas emissions in the next eight years or the problem could be irreversible, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Of his latest image, Tunick explains, “I want viewers to feel the vulnerability of their existence and how it relates closely to the sensitivity of the world's glaciers.”
At the current rate, most glaciers in Switzerland are expected to disappear completely by 2080. In the past 150 years, alpine glaciers have reduced in size by approximately one third of their surface and half of their mass. Ironically, about half of the naked participants complained of the exact same problem BECAUSE of the glacier.
